Industrial Processes
Melting & Casting
Induction furnace / electric arc / vacuum induction melting (VIM). Electric arc + ladle refining for steels; vacuum remelt (VAR) for aerospace purity. Cast into ingots, billets or near-net shapes.
Forging
Hot working between dies to consolidate cast structure and align grain flow β the classic route for crankshafts, turbine discs and structural frames. Cold forging adds work hardening.
Rolling & Extrusion
Hot/cold rolling to plate, sheet and foil; extrusion for complex profiles (Al frames). Controlled rolling + recrystallization controls final grain size.
Powder Metallurgy
Atomize alloy β press and sinter, or hot isostatic press (HIP). Enables ODS alloys, refractory alloys and full-density near-net parts impossible to cast.
Heat Treatment
Solution treat β quench β temper (steels); solution + age hardening (Al-Cu, Al-Zn, 17-4PH, maraging); slow furnace cool for annealing. The microstructure engineering step.
Work Hardening
Cold rolling/drawing multiplies dislocation density β pure Cu and Al gain 3-5Γ strength with trade-off in ductility. Recovered by annealing.
Joining
TIG/laser/electron-beam welding, friction stir welding (aluminum), diffusion bonding and brazing. Weldability depends on C, P, S content and phase stability.
Additive Manufacturing
Laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) and electron-beam melting print complex superalloy parts (Scalmalloy, 316L, Ti-6Al-4V) directly from powder.
